Ginger and Ramon checked each phone station set up around the meeting room of the community hall, making sure every phone bank volunteer had a rap sheet and phone list, and a copy of the referendum. Shelves along the wall sagged under boxes of mailers and information pieces. The precinct walkers handed them out while they were knocking on doors trying to identify anti-casino supporters.

“My phone hasn’t stopped ringing,” Ginger said over her shoulder to Ramon. “Everybody wants to tell me about Kathleen and wring their hands about what we should do now.”

“Are you telling them that you’re the one who found her?”

“Are you crazy? The reporter from the online daily talked to somebody who saw me sitting inside the police unit when all the commotion was going on. He put two and two together.”

Ginger stomped over to a file cabinet. Screeching out a drawer, she crammed the expense report she’d barely started on back into its file. She was never going to get to the spa in Santa Barbara at this rate. “You tell him about seeing the guy who did it?’

“Nope. Not telling nobody. And you keep your trap shut. He wanted all the gory details about what Kathleen looked like. Jeez, I’m doing my best to forget. I’ll probably have nightmares.” She said it lightly, so that Ramon would think she was laughing it off.

“You see today’s paper? Nothing new,” Ramon said, his dark eyes intense, watching Ginger. He tossed the newspaper in the waste basket.

“Man, they love to talk about how the casino’s going to bring in new businesses. Everybody’s going to get rich. Everybody will have a great job, a new hotel room, their own parking places every time they want to drive downtown. I just love hearing how nothing’s going to change for the ninety-eight thousand people who actually live here. We won’t even notice the casino. Honest!”

Ramon pawed through his briefcase, grumbling. He wore his uniform of black t-shirt, earring, and black jeans.

“How about the quarter million people who come here every day to work? Double that on Beach weekends! They’ve lost a lot of political capital,” he muttered, “if they thought killing her was a good idea.”

“What about a memorial service?”

They both looked up as one of the members of the Coalition’s Steering Committee breezed in, taking off her straw sun hat and slinging it on a filing cabinet. Barb Graham, one of Ginger’s favorite volunteers, plumped down in the chair. She held the neck of her dress away from her scrawny chest and fanned herself.
