Driver of Chinatown bus in crash that killed four passengers denied bail
A Virginia judge denied bail Wednesday for the driver of a discount Chinatown bus that ran off I-95 near Richmond, killing four passengers.
Kin Yiu Cheung of Queens will remain at the Pamunkey Regional Jail in Hanover, Va.
Cheung, 37, is accused of falling asleep at the wheel of a Sky Express bus traveling from Greensboro, N.C., to New York with 59 passengers aboard on May 31.
The bus hit an embankment and overturned, injuring dozens of people.
Passengers had heard Cheung complaining on his cellphone that he was tired and had no time to rest between trips, according to court papers.
Circuit Court Judge Joseph Ellis said he was compelled - "though with regret" - to hold Cheung because of a discrepancy between the addresses he listed on official papers.
According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, prosecutors said Cheung gave his address as Flushing on his commercial driver's license application but listed his address as Elmhurst on Sky Express Inc. job application.
Cheung is charged with four felony counts of involuntary manslaughter and misdemeanor reckless driving.
Killed were four women: Karen Blyden-Decastro, 46, of Cambria Heights, NY; Sie Giok Giang, 63, of Philadelphia; Josefa Torres, 78, of Jamaica, N.Y.; and Denny Estefany Martinez, 25, of Jersey City, N.J.
He will be arraigned on July 6.
The Richmond crash is the latest in a string of calamities involving low-cost Chinatown buses.
On March 12, 14 people were killed coming home from the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut on a World Wide Tours bus when the driver reportedly fell asleep, scattering bodies across the highway in the Bronx.
A Super Luxury Tours Bus crashed two days later near East Brunswick, N.J., while transporting 43 people from Chinatown to Pennsylvania, killing the driver and a passenger.
