Patton excelled on birthday in Colts' victory
— Cory Patton admitted he has never had a birthday like the one he had Saturday.Patton, playing in only his 12th game as a member of the San Angelo Colts, hit three home runs, drove in eight and then made a relief appearance in the ninth inning, striking out two to close out a 19-7 Colts victory at Foster Field.
"It was fantastic," Colts manager Doc Edwards said. "It was his birthday, and for him to come out and do that and pitch in a game too, it was a whole day for him. You can't get any more for your birthday."
The pitcher/designated hitter batted .469 with five home runs and 18 RBI in his first 12 games as a Colt, through last weekend's four-game series with Edinburg. He batted in only eight of those games.
His first appearance in a Colts uniform was on the mound on July 7 at Rio Grande Valley. Through Saturday's game against Edinburg, he had appeared in five games, pitched 4 innings, struck out three, walked one and had a 5.79 ERA.
Despite more than 50 years of playing and managing professional baseball, Edwards hasn't been around many hitter/pitcher types. But he is glad to have Patton and thinks the versatile athlete has a bright future ahead of him.
"I haven't (managed many hitter/pitcher types), but there are a lot of guys that have done it in the past," Edwards said. "It is just nice to have him here, because with the way he has been hitting, he still has a chance to go to the big leagues."
Patton was an all-conference outfielder at Texas A&M. He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2003, but opted to return to A&M for his senior year and was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the sixth round of the 2004 draft.
He spent the next four seasons in the Blue Jays' organization. In 2005, he hit 20 home runs and had 66 RBI while splitting time between the Midwest and NY-Penn leagues.
In 2006, he batted .269 with 21 home runs and 88 RBI in the Midwest and Florida State leagues. In 2007 and 2008, he spent all of both seasons in the Florida State League. In 2007, he batted .269 with 10 home runs and 54 RBI. Then in 2008, he batted .305 with 13 home runs and 70 RBI.
He was released by the Blue Jays after the 2008 season and spent 2009 in Winnipeg of the Northern League, where he batted .239 with 13 home runs and 62 RBI. Last year, he played in Fargo of the Northern League, where he batted .279 with two home runs and 29 RBI.
He began pitching in 2009 with Winnipeg, and pitched five innings in six games. Last season in Fargo, he was 1-1 in 18 appearances with a 3.63 ERA in 17 innings.
