Cincinnati Labor Market 2010: Few Jobs Pay More Than $50000 Per Year

Retail salespersons and food preparation and serving workers including fast food were the occupations with the highest employment in 2010 in the Cincinnati MSA, according to data released in May by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.  These two occupations combined made up 5.3 percent of total Cincinnati employment, with employment levels of 26,500 and 24,180, respectively.  These data from the Occupational Employment Statistics program provide employment and wage estimates for wage and salary workers in 22 major occupational groups and nearly 800 detailed occupations. 

A few findings from the data:

The 10 largest occupations in the Cincinnati MSA accounted for 21.3 percent of total employment.  In addition to retail salespersons and food preparation and serving workers, the largest occupations included registered nurses; cashiers; waiters and waitresses; customer service representatives; general office clerks; laborers and freight, stock and material movers, handlers; stock clerks and order fillers; janitors and cleaners.  These 10 occupations accounted for 205,110 jobs.  Most of the largest occupations were relatively low paying.  Of the 10 largest occupations, only registered nurses had an average annual wage above the Cincinnati all-occupations average annual wage of $42,640 per year.  Retail salespersons with an average hourly wage of $11.98 and food preparation and serving workers with an average hourly wage of $8.61 were among the lowest paying occupations in Cincinnati. Among the 10 occupations with the highest average annual wages in 2010, all but one, chief executives, were medical doctors.  Surgeons, with an average annual wage of $237,530, and anesthesiologists, with an average annual wage of $236,090, were the highest paying occupations.  Rounding out the 10 highest paying occupations were obstetricians and gynecologists; psychiatrists; general dentists; chief executives; family and general practitioners; general pediatricians; and podiatrists.  The 10 highest paying occupations in the Cincinnati MSA accounted for just 7,680 jobs or less than 1 percent of all jobs. There were 264,590 jobs in occupations with an average annual wage of $50,000 or more accounting for 28.2 percent of all jobs.

General pediatricians earned a median annual salary of $165,720 in May 2010, according to the BLS. Per industry, pediatricians who worked at outpatient care centers earned $182,090 a year, while those who worked as universities and professional schools earned $99,190 a year.

Pediatrican Working Conditions Employment projections were available only for the larger category of physicians and surgeons, which was expected to grow 22% from 2008-2018.

Pediatrician Job Description

Along with general medicine, growth and development monitoring are the basis of a pediatrician’s practice. A general pediatrician must track and administer immunizations on schedule. The doctor must be able to communicate well with both children and parents. They often need to provide detailed explanations of treatment course options and assuage fears. Sympathetic bedside manners are highly valued in this particular area of medicine.

Pediatrician Colleges

Pediatricians are expected to hold at least a medical degree in pediatrics. Some specialties or employers may require pediatricians to hold a Ph.D. in their specific field. A 2 to 5 year residency program must also be completed. Pediatricians must be fully licensed and certified. Other required skills include: the cabability to effectively relate to and communicate with children, educational skills, diagnostic skills, analytical skills, computer skills, research skills, the ability to multitask, the ability to work as part of a team, the desire to help others, and the ability to work an irregular schedule. The field of pediatric medicine is expanding and has a projected growth rate of at least 18%.
