Minor league padres become a major attraction in Tucson
— When the Arizona Diamondbacks pulled their Triple-A team from here after the 2008 season, the Old Pueblo felt a baseball void.Tucson, after all, had fielded a team in the Pacific Coast League every year since 1969.
Then, this spring, the city was without a major league spring training camp for the first time since 1945. Suddenly, that baseball void was the size of a giant saguaro.
But, minor league baseball being its nomadic self, Portland’s loss became Tucson’s gain — and a plus for San Diegans who might be interested in making the six-hour drive to see a team with a familiar look.
This is a team that has a swinging friar mascot in the stands and on its caps, wears camouflage jerseys on Sundays and sells cheap tickets to a grassy area beyond the fences where families spread blankets and let their kids run free.
These are the Tucson Padres – known as the “T-Pads” around here — and they’re trying to fill the baseball void.
“Everybody’s happy about it,” said Jessica Stephens, director of communications for the Metropolitan Tucson Convention and Visitors Bureau, of the T-Pads’ arrival. “The loss of baseball was quite a blow. They’ve filled an empty hole.”
Tim Hagerty has noticed, too, that the Triple-A Padres have drawn attention from the big-league team’s hometown. Hagerty, the T-Pads’ director of broadcasting/media relations, said the team has a large number of Facebook friends from San Diego and hopes the Tucson-San Diego connection might work well for both cities.
San Diegans can make the 400-mile trek east to spend a few days in Tucson seeing the sights and scouting future prospects (who may be faring better than the boys at Petco Park this season), and Tucson fans can join the annual Zonie migration to San Diego in summer to watch the big club and former T-Pads.
“I think it’s going to be fun for people on both sides,” Hagerty said.
This isn’t the first time the Padres have had their Triple-A team within driving distance of San Diego. From 1983-2000, the Padres’ PCL team was in Las Vegas, about 330 miles away. Then the franchise was shifted to Portland, where it stayed from 2001 through last year. Flying 1,000 miles to Portland for a long weekend of Triple-A baseball wasn’t exactly convenient for San Diegans, so when the Beavers were uprooted from their downtown park in Portland – which was being converted to a Major League Soccer stadium – the team had to find a place to land.
