Boise made lifelong impression on departing Idaho Statesman publisher

MI-AI PARRISH

Age: 40

Married: David Parrish, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter.

Education: University of Maryland, College Park, where she was the editor of the Diamondback.

First newspaper job: Copy editor and reporter at the Virginia-Pilot in 1992.

Other positions: Deputy managing editor at the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the San Francisco Chronicle and the Arizona Republic, and assistant Sunday editor at the Chicago Sun-Times.

Former Idaho Statesman President and Publisher Mi-Ai Parrish took up her new position June 20 as president and publisher of the Kansas City Star. The Star has about four times the employees and circulation of Boise’s newspaper. Both papers are owned by the McClatchy Co.

It was in Boise that she cut her teeth as a publisher after rising through the news ranks at other newspapers.

Parrish came to Boise in July 2006, soon after McClatchy acquired the Statesman as part of McClatchy’s purchase of Knight Ridder Inc. The local housing boom ended soon afterward, and by 2008 the economy was heading into the worst recession since World War II, hurting advertising sales.

Parrish, 40, led the Statesman through a transformation that kept the media company profitable, including outsourcing printing and creating new online and print products such as Business Insider.

Q: What is the state of the newspaper industry?

A: It’s been in flux, and it’s been a challenging time. It’s certainly the most challenging in the modern era. We haven’t seen anything like it. The economy is the huge piece of that because it’s hurting everybody. But the industry itself is seeing some stabilization. At the heart of it, the journalism is the important part. The journalism isn’t going to go away. The journalism isn’t going to die. We always need good journalism. We need watchdogs in a democracy, and we’ll figure out the technology and the business model that gets us there, and that’s transforming as we speak. But we’re OK.

Q: What is the state of the Statesman?

A: The Statesman has weathered a tremendous storm like so many businesses in the Valley and so many media entities, but has done it through innovation and creativity and thoughtfulness and calm planning, and is actually doing well. It’s been a challenging time, but right now we’re seeing Sunday circulation growth, and ad revenues are in much better shape. We’re one of the best in the company year over year. So we’re really seeing a lot of hard work bear fruit.

Missing Newspaper Inserts Being Blamed on Extreme Couponers ...

In Boise, Idaho, some local extreme couponers may have possibly crossed the line and become newspaper thieves.

Coupon inserts from newspapers the Idaho-Press Tribune (Nampa) and the Idaho Statesman (Boise) are reported to have been going missing. For instance, a representative from the Idaho Statesman reported that one Sunday in May all the coupon inserts from a particular news rack were missing, with the newspapers not being purchased. The coupon inserts for that day were valued to be from three hundred to a thousand dollars.

Statesman’s Director for Circulation, Frank Peak, stated that these missing inserts are becoming a real concern because the value of the coupons are not insignificant amounts and there is a growing popularity and interest in couponing during the past few months.

The newspaper has already filed a report with the police regarding this incident, especially after Don Waters, the newspaper’s sales manager, managed to observe a woman take out all the advertisements from a newspaper stand. The woman only purchased one newspaper, however.

Director Peak puts the blame on the current economic situation of the country, as well as the increasing interest in couponing. Adding to this public interest in couponing is the reality television show “Extreme Couponing.” In the program, viewers are drawn to watching extreme couponers walk out of grocery stores spending less than ten dollars for grocery items worth ten times than the amount they actually paid because of their coupons.

Idaho Press Tribune has taken its first action against this incident by posting signs on newspaper boxes, saying that taking out copies without paying for them is considered theft. After implementing the signs, the newspaper publisher has observed a significant drop in the newspaper thefts. New Deal: How Long Will Consumers be Loyal to the Groupon Loyalty Card?
