Jay-Z performs at Cartoon Network's Adult Swim event
Jay-Z has had his hand in nearly every entertainment venue there is: music producer, singer, co-owner of an NBA team, clothing designer, author, business owner and now he’s making his way into television. A plan to join forces with the sister network of Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, has been confirmed.
The rumors were unfounded but the agreement between the television network and the rap star became clearer when Jay put on a surprise set at Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim’s annual Upfront event at the Roseland Ballroom. The rapper sang ‘Thank You’ over the top of The Boondocks theme song. The Upfront event typically previews any new programs that will be broadcast in the upcoming season. With Jay-Z’s performance, fans were hopeful that he would confirm his plans with Adult Swim. Turner Broadcasting System, the parent company of the Cartoon Network and Adult Swim has confirmed there is a deal underway. This is good news to those who were expecting the rapper to make his announcement live after his performance.
While this may be Jay-Z’s first time in television, both Cartoon Network and Adult Swim have a significant history of working with rappers and hip hop artists. The Boondocks, an animated show featured on the network has welcomed Snoop Dog, Mos Def, Busta Rhymes and Ghostface Killah as characters with speaking parts. Hip Hop singer Ne-Yo has a show on Adult Swim along with Andre 3000 from Outkast and T-Pain. The collaboration between Jay and Adult Swim will likely be an animated series but details are not yet available. It is known that Jay will not simply be lending his voice or singing on any shows but will be creating original programming.
Jay-Z has previously tried to budge his way into the television industry. In 2007, he teamed with Harvey Weinstein and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs to try and take over Comcast’s G4 gamer channel. The deal never took off.
Jay-Z is reportedly worth $450 million dollars. His company Roc Nation is worth about $150 million of his fortune. He is co-owner of the 40/40 club along with several other successful sports bars and bistros. He came just shy of the $1 billion in required earnings to join Forbes Richest in America in 2010.
