Terry Sparrow
Terry Lynn Sparrow, 61, of Keokuk died at 3 a.m. Thursday, April 14, 2011, at home.
Born July 7, 1949, in Keokuk, he was the son of Lester Oren and Laurene "Rene" Evelyn Wemhoner Sparrow. On Dec. 30, 1977, he married Karen Kaneff in Keokuk.
Mr. Sparrow worked at several restaurants in Keokuk, and acquired 4th Street Cafe in July 2000.
He helped open Missouri Territory Restaurants in Wayland, Mo., and Hannibal, Mo. He had worked in Des Moines, Denver, Estes Park, Colo., and Hannibal, refining his cooking skills. He worked as a reporter for the Quincy Herald-Whig in Quincy, Ill., and received an award from the Illinois State Police for saving a life.
He graduated from Hamilton, Ill., High School where he played football for the Cardinals. He grew five produce gardens while in high school and the income helped with college expenses. He graduated from Hannibal-LaGrange College.
He served in the National Guard and was activated during Desert Storm.
He was a member of The Thunderbirds, a Native American culture group, National Gourd Society, MENSA and the Spiritual Frontiers Fellowship. He was active in animal rights in Hannibal, and once a month transported a carload of dogs and cats to St. Louis for adoption.
He was active with National Arbor Day and acquired hundreds of trees to distribute to Hannibal-area students and groups. He enjoyed reading.
Survivors include his wife; his mother; one daughter, Ariessa Sparrow of Des Moines; two sons, David Sparrow of Denver, and Ben Sparrow of Keokuk; one stepson, Chris Ball of Conyers, Ga.; one adopted son, Steven Allen of Fort Madison; two brothers, Galen Sparrow of Warsaw, Ill., and Carson Sparrow of Smithville, Va.; nine grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Center in Keokuk, where family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Sparrow will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at New Testament Christian Church, with Bill Hauser officiating.
The body will be cremated following the funeral.
