Caltrain Receives Lifesaver From High-Speed Rail
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- The federal government announced it's ready to give $16 million for the construction of a high-speed rail line in the Bay Area. The money could also provide a boost for cash-strapped Caltrain. The train system is dealing with a $30 million deficit and is bumping fares up by a quarter. The federal grant, which is for a high-tech safety system, should help keep the agency afloat. All rail systems are supposed to have the new system by 2015, but Caltrain would not have received any federal help without the promise of the high-speed rail line. "If we don't have high-speed rail planned for this corridor, we'd have to find other funding sources to make this project happen and we haven't identified any that have the capacity to accommodate the project cost," explained Seamus Murphy of Caltrain. The new safety system would help avoid train versus train crashes like one in 2008 in Southern California that killed 25 people. The system is satellite-based and can slow trains automatically. It could save Caltrain money in the long term, but the project is expected to cost about $250 million. Where the rest of the funding comes from is currently unknown, which has some people doubting how much help the grant really could provide. "Well, that's one thing about transportation politics, you're going to have a really high price tag," said Andy Chow of the Bay Rail Alliance.
