I’ve contributed my pennyworth at both the British Cheese Awards (rather smart, and run by cheese supremo Juliet Harbutt) and the World Cheese Awards. We’d bagged the coveted category of Melton Mowbray pork pies, much to the envy of the other judges who were on sections like “vegetarian” “steak and kidney” and “pasty – not Cornish”.
First up was some revision. The qualities of a proper Melton Mowbray pork pie are strictly laid down, and in 2008 they were awarded Protected Designation of Origin status, meaning that they can’t be made anywhere else in the world.
Key attributes include the colour of the meat, which will be a greyish pink rather than the bright pink of other pork pies, due to the lack of preservatives added. The other main difference is the bulging shape, since Melton Mowbrays are baked without a tin or metal ring to keep the sides straight.
So far, so uncontroversial. But Henrietta Green, the foodie force of nature behind Food Lovers’ Fairs, was among the judges, and she was doubtful about some of the finer details of the ingredients. “They are allowing rusk!” she told me disapprovingly.
