Ty Segall Talks 'Bruise Cruise,' 'Goodbye Bread' and Paranoia

Prolific fuzz-rock youngster Ty Segall 's new album, 'Goodbye Bread,' drops today on Drag City, and while it retains his '60s garage-punk leanings, he's dared to slow down the tempo and take a stab at writing more defined lyrics. On the phone while driving near L.A. last week, Segall spoke to Spinner to explain some of his "freakout"-inspired new songs, the evils of the Internet and why he'd rather be a guest on a booze cruise than a performer. I've always had problems with my brain, so a lot of the songs are about issues I have with paranoia or freak-outs. 'When My Head Explodes' is about being on stage, having people look at you and expecting you to perform, then literally your head explodes. A lot of the songs are about this thing in your brain that makes you push yourself to do things and try to keep it together, but there's a constant reminder your mind is a fragile thing. You can lose it at any moment -- that's a reality for me -- which I try to laugh off. It's just not worth spending so much time on. People spend hours constantly checking and tweeting and Facebooking. And it's cool to check up on your friends and see what's going on in the world, but it's not cool to spend five hours of your day on the computer looking at the Internet. There's already plenty of things to make you feel s----y about yourself. Why would you want to be involved in some of the drama going on in that social realm? No, I like coming back to a house, a room, that's mine and is nice. I'm definitely not the type who just wants to travel everywhere. I feel like a nuisance to whoever I'm staying with. You have to be able to come home, recharge your batteries, wash your clothes. We're always crashing with people, and it's fun, but at the end of a tour you just feel kind of gross. I think the Bruise Cruise [Festival 2011]. It was a cruise ship for vacationing to the Bahamas. It was super surreal. There were little kids getting all hyper, running around eating pizza slices in their bathing suits, going down water slides with their ice cream cones screaming at each other. Families were hanging out at the buffet line, people getting sunburned and wasted in jacuzzis. And there was Vice magazine filming the whole thing. People were just letting it all ride out, man, it was just a f---ing trip. It was cool hanging out with people drinking hurricanes on our way to the Bahamas, but it was really weird.

Ty Segall Talks 'Bruise Cruise,' 'Goodbye Bread' and Paranoia

Some reviews have pointed out a Troggs influence to your tunes. Sure, I love the Troggs. 'Wild Thing' -- that whole record's a classic. There are a couple of tracks referring to your cranium: 'When My Head Explodes' and 'When Your Head Goes.

HANDICAPPING INSIGHTS

This year, Hannon, former drummer for the Troggs of "Wild Thing" fame, showed up loaded with CANFORD CLIFFS (Tagula), who won three Group 1 stakes last year going a mile and opened up this season with a win in the Lockinge S. (Eng-G1) at the distance.

Eighinger: A blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl named Debbie and the sounds of summer

"Wild Thing," The Troggs (1966): One of the all-time great summer love anthems. I'll always remember a blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl named Debbie from that summer, whose favorite song was "Wild Thing." It was the summer before I entered junior high and

I felt fortunate to have the Troggs and Jimi Hendrix cover "Wild Thing" and Merrilee Rush do "Angel of the Morning." I think many of my songs have been recorded with the proper feel. My favorite is probably Anne Murray doing a song I wrote for my son

The Karinty Connection

Song 3: A Thing about You by Tom Petty. Thing isn't an attractive word or a clever word but I also thought about Graham Parker's 'Silly Thing' and The Beatles' 'Things We Said Today" or George Harrison's 'Something' or even the Trogg's "Wild Thing".

ROCKAEOLOGY.COM: Before the Troggs, the Wild Ones: 'Wild Thing'

In 1965 Sybil Burton opened Arthur, a New York City discotheque that catered to glitterati like Rudolf Nureyev, Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams and Liza Minelli. For her house band, Burton hired away the Wild Ones from the better-known Peppermint Lounge and made drummer Jordan Christopher her musical director.

Burton, who would later marry Christopher, helped secure the group a recording contract with United Artists. For an upcoming session, seasoned producer Gerry Granahan called songwriter Chip Taylor to ask if he had any new songs for the band.

Cory Frye writes that it didn’t take Taylor, brother of actor Jon Voight, long to come up with “Wild Thing.”
Taylor hunkered down with a guitar and some basic chords and crafted a brand-new song in the three hours between his telephone conversation and a demo session he’d already booked at a New York studio.

“I started fooling around my office with a cool little rhythm thing,” Taylor wrote in his memoir, “Songs from a Dutch Tour,” “with a percussive-type strum that had its own sweaty unschooled thing. My guess is that if I was taught to play guitar, my strum would not have been that organic and this song could not have been written.”

The lyrics arrived on the fly, concocted to match the groove, with pauses added for deliberate effect… He added one final flourish: a whistled interlude by engineer Ron Johnson.
All the records in the late '50s and '60s were done by arrangers writing out every note for every player. So, when you walked into a session, most of the time it was with strings and horns and stuff…

Even though it was coming into rock 'n' roll, there were always still going to be some string players around. There were still going to be notes written out for the drummer to play every beat and for the bass player to play every note. So, with “Wild Thing” it's the strumming. The guitar is almost like a little bit of a percussion instrument. When they recorded it, they didn't do any of the in-between things. It just meant nothing! It didn't get the power of the song. They took the power of the song and they diminished it.
I don’t read music, so I picks up this “Wild Thing” and I just reads the lyrics. And I think “What the hell is this? ‘You make everything… groovy?’—I just thought it was a joke. I mean the word “groovy” was right out. “What crap are they sending us?
