Marion County Health Department Owed $310000 By State
The Marion County Health Department is now owed more than $300,000 by the state of Illinois.
Administrator Lori Ryan read from a long list of overdue bills for providing state funded programs at Tuesday night's health board meeting. She notes fortunately the department remains strong financially and there will not be a need for layoffs or cutbacks. "At this point in time we still have our reserves, about six months worth. But they owe us a large amount of money, about $310,000 and we don't know when we are going to receive that," Ryan explained. Ryan says they are in a position of writing grant requests for the coming year while not being paid anything for work in the fiscal year that ends July first.
Ryan had positive news to share about a number of health department programs. She reports the first ever Teen Heart Smart Program held for 52 female students at Franklin Park Middle School in Salem went well and they have been asked to repeat it next year. Ryan says 27 have sought help in using tobacco products through the state's QuitLine program. The addition of two temporary breast feeding peer counselors has had its intended result of getting more mothers to breast feed.
The Health Department will be offering school physicals again this year. The physicals will be given on Friday, July 22nd, at the Salem office and on Friday, July 29th, at the Centralia office. The cost will be 40-dollars. Appointments are required by calling the health department office where you want your child to receive the physical.
