Computer: Software guards tech gadgets, thwarts thieves
About a month ago, I walked away from a coffee shop without my iPad. After I collected my stomach from my feet, I frantically raced back to the shop and practically offered to kiss the employee that had held it for me. I'm sure many can relate to the panic of losing a portable electronic device. Many of us carry personal and financial data on a multitude of devices -- from laptops to tablets to smartphones -- that can be easily lost or stolen. My experience got me thinking: What tools are out there to protect my devices, other than padlocking them to my wrist? I'm quite fond of keeping my wrists free for more useful purposes.
On March 21, Joshua Kaufman's Macbook was stolen from his apartment in Oakland, Calif. When he reported the crime, police said they didn't have enough resources to help. But Kaufman had taken the precaution of installing a program called Hidden ( http://hiddenapp.com ). After activating the software online, he was able to remotely capture his Macbook's location, see photos of the perpetrator using the laptop's iSight camera, even monitor the criminal's use of his computer. He gave the program's data to the authorities, allowing them to recover the stolen Mac. By June 1, he had it back. Getting Hidden for your Mac costs $15 a year for one computer or $45 a year for up to five computers. It's available from Flipcode Ltd., which also offers theft-recovery assistance when local authorities are too overwhelmed to track it down.
While this is great news for my Mac-using spouse, what's available for the multitude of users running Windows-based laptops and tablets? Consider a program aptly named "LoJack for Laptops" ( http://www.absolute.com/en/lojackforlaptops/home.aspx ). The basic version ($39.99 a year) will allow you to locate, and remotely lock and delete, sensitive information from your computer. LoJack even has a feature that will recover any erased data, just in case a thief tries to wipe your drive and resell your PC. The premium version ($59.99 a year) has enhanced location services, contacts the police for you and provides up to $1,000 toward a replacement if your laptop isn't recovered.
Smartphone users can rest easier after installing Lookout Mobile Security ( www.mylookout.com ), a free anti-virus and back-up solution for Android, Blackberry and Windows 7 phones. Log in to the Lookout site to see a lost phone's location on Google Maps. As long as the phone is on and has a Wi-Fi or cell network connection, Lookout will be able to track it, even if the SIM card has been replaced. Spring for the premium version ($2.99 a month or $29.99 a year), and you'll be able to back-up data and perform a remote wipe and lock to protect your personal data being from compromised. You can even wreak a little revenge on the lowlife that swiped your phone by activating a "SCREAM" mode. This option overrides any volume setting, making it impossible for the perpetrator to use or sell your device.
