Urban Meyer's ESPN debut likely will be at Ohio State

ESPN will formally announce Friday that Meyer, working with play-by-play announcer Dave Pash and analyst Chris Spielman , will call noon ET ESPN games that are largely expected to involve Big Ten teams. And, from game sites, he'll also appear live on College GameDay as well as do taped features for that show. Says ESPN senior coordinating producer Ed Placey: "He wanted to do everything."

And clearly ESPN isn't worried about the Meyer calling teams that might want the ex-Florida coach to become their coach: Meyer's on-air opener will likely be Akron at Ohio State on Sept. 3.

Meaning, Meyer from the get-go would opine on the Buckeyes, the speculation leader when it comes to his own coaching future and the school where he was once an assistant and coached Spielman. Can he be candid? "The human side of it is you'd like to stay away from certain topics when you're dealing with friends, great institutions, players you've dealt with. But I have a job to do. I've talked to (ESPN's) Jon Gruden about this. You don't have to criticize, you have to analyze — but not get personal."

Meyer says he "never studied" and "never thought" about TV when he has watched it — "it's true, he'd never really thought about how broadcasting works," says ESPN's Placey — and after working two ESPN spring games he says, "I can speak on behalf of all coaches that we have no idea how much effort goes into broadcasts."

Brent Musburger , who worked an Oregon spring game with Meyer, says "my initial reaction is, if he wants to do this he'd be very good." Producer Placey says he's seen coaches come to TV and "if they see they have a chance to be excellent (on-air), they like it and want to continue."

But for now, Meyer doesn't have a game plan for handling the inevitable questions about his future: "I'm not really good at that kind of stuff. I give honest answers and that can hurt you. Everybody has the right to change their mind. I've asked for assistance on how to handle this. I'm not going to say I will coach again or that I won't coach again." And he's not ready to answer this either: Will he wear TV makeup? "No comment."

Networks should dump flag waving

Various on-air and online pundits this week ripped NBC — even members of Congress expressed concern — for the network omitting the words "under God" in what was intended to be a patriotic feature on its Sunday's U.S. Open coverage.
