Planning for Road Safety Week 2011
Road Safety Week is a partnership event involving local community activities across the UK, including many coordinated by local authorities working with schools, colleges and other partners. Now in its 15th year, it is coordinated by the charity Brake with support from QBE insurance and courier company FedEx.
The 2011 theme is Too Young to Die, highlighting that road crashes are more likely to kill young people than any other cause[1], but that these violent, devastating events can be prevented.
Brake is appealing to local authorities to help make this year’s Road Safety Week the biggest yet, during the first year of the global UN Decade of Action for Road Safety. As the UK’s flagship road safety event, Road Safety Week provides an ideal opportunity for road safety professionals to launch new initiatives, run special one-off events, and gain publicity for their vital work to tackle the loss of young lives on our roads.
Local authorities can access free electronic resources and advice to help them get involved. Simply go to www.roadsafetyweek.org.uk and click on ‘road safety professionals’ for initial ideas and to order a free action pack. The pack includes downloadable resources that can be displayed during the Week, ideas, and details of what other local authorities have done in previous years.
Brake’s long-running 2Young2Die programme can also be used by local authorities during Road Safety Week to increase awareness among young people about staying safe as drivers and passengers. It includes an annual competition, workshops, and website www.2young2die.org.uk.
Brake is also inviting local authorities to sponsor giant road safety banners to be displayed in prominent town centre locations. For information on this and other promotional materials available from Brake go to www.roadsafetyweek.org.uk and click on resources.
Local authorities can also take part in the Road Safety Week Awards in 2011, which recognise the organisations, companies and individuals who do the most to get the road safety message across during the week. Details of how to enter will be sent out to everyone who orders an action pack for the week.
Brake campaigns director Julie Townsend says: “Brake really values the involvement of local authorities in Road Safety Week. They carry out vital road safety work throughout the year, and by linking to this national event they can further raise awareness in their communities and generate extra publicity for their valuable work.

Courier Insurance
Courier insurance is a type of insurance that is designed to protect vehicles that carry other people’s goods or property. For courier delivery services in the UK, it is a requirement to have this type of insurance no matter what type of services you are delivering. While courier insurance is similar to car insurance and offers many of the same functions, such as claims, replacement vehicles, and legal discounts, it differs in what is offered for various forms of coverage.
The insurance also follows any traditional form of insurance cover: comprehensive, third party fire and theft, and third party only. You should expect your insurance policy to carry an excess, typically around £500 but most policies can have this excess reduced under extraordinary circumstances.
It is possible that you could be eligible for light haulage cover but this type of insurance often restricts the number of loads you are allowed to carry in one day, and could also limit the cover to pre-booked assignments. Although light haulage cover is a cheaper option, you must ensure that you inform your employer as many courier companies will not allow you to take on work without adequate insurance cover.
Whatever insurance policy you take out ensure that you read the wording very carefully as it is imperative that you are aware of policy exclusions, for example, it is unlikely that you will be able to make a claim if you have left your vehicle unlocked. There are other exclusions anyone considering taking out a policy should know such as driving at airports, windscreen cover, and carrying hazardous goods are often excluded from insurance policies.
In order to be eligible for courier insurance, a driver must have held a UK drivers licence for a minimum of two years, and must be over the age of 25.
In addition to courier insurance, which is a legal requirement, it is also advised to hold Goods in Transit GIT insurance and Public Liability insurance – these types of cover are often available at a reduced rate when you take out an insurance policy. GIT will cover the goods you are carrying against theft, loss and damage and is often a requirement of employers. Public Liability insurance will cover you against any claims from the public or customers for damage or injury caused by you, for example, injuring someone with a parcel.
No matter the requirements for your courier employment, you should speak with an insurance provider that will custom tailor a quote for you.
