Corry celebrates 150th birthday

CORRY -- All it took was a couple of rail lines and some oil to get Corry started.

This week, residents of this historic manufacturing city in the southeastern corner of Erie County celebrate 150 years of its successes and, at times, hard-fought survival.

A few years ago, jobs were so plentiful here that employers advertised them on billboards.

The great recession took its toll here, as it did everywhere. The sale of Erie Plastics, a manufacturer almost synonymous with the city, and the subsequent loss of the plant's nearly 400 jobs in 2009, cut deep.

"It was a body blow both financially and psychologically," said Steven Bishop, executive director of the Corry Higher Education Council, which provides training to workers.

But as the city prepares to throw its biggest party since the centennial in 1961, residents find much in its heritage and future to celebrate.

The Erie Plastics building still sits empty along Route 6 across from Walmart.

But hope is taking root in the churning dirt on the hillside behind the big box store.

At a time when many smaller communities have lost rural health centers, Corry is building a new 73,323-square-foot hospital focused on patient care, privacy and confidentiality, said Barb Nichols, Corry Memorial Hospital's chief executive.

"I think it means more than most people know, especially given the landscape changes coming in health care," she said.

The latest census numbers show 37 percent of Corry's workforce is employed in manufacturing.

For a city of Corry's size -- population about 7,000 -- that is "off the charts," Bishop said.

"It really defines who Corry is. We are a blue-collar manufacturing community.

"It is what ties Corry's past, present and future. It is what we were. It is what we are. And probably, hopefully, who we will continue to be."

A party for the ages

The weeklong CorryFest starts Monday with the raising of a flag, music and the opening of a 125-year-old time capsule.

Other events crowd the rest of the week, including carnival rides; a motorcycle and car cruise; Civil War displays; a parade featuring both the Shriners and the local women's roller derby team, named Nightmare on Main Street; a gun raffle; and the Miss Corry pageant.

"It is going to be awesome. That is what I think," said 12-year-old Brett Thomas, who paused on a bike ride through downtown on a recent day to reflect on the prospect of his hometown's birthday bash.
