Exclusive interview: MUCKY PUP hits the East Coast Tsunami Fest in Reading, PA!
It is now 2011, and the guys are still here! Although Mucky Pup has not released (or recorded) any new material, interest in the band and its sporadic live performances have only increased. With the East Coast Tsunami Fest (at Reverb in Reading, PA) merely hours away, we sat down with main man and ringleader Chris Milnes to dig a little deeper into the “muck” and enlighten the masses to the wild, weird world of Mucky Pup!
So how did you come to be involved with the East Coast Tsunami Fest?
Since we started doing reunion shows, I’ve been on Facebook reconnecting with old (and new) people, and I came across a friend in PA who was more of a BMX/skateboarder kind of guy. He mentioned that he was putting together this really big concert, and I told him that it sounded like something Mucky Pup should be on. And he said, “You’re right!” So, a few emails later, we were on it! In the electronic age, it’s very different how bookings happen and how networking happens. It’s been very welcoming and very exciting.
What’s the story with these American shows? Whenever you announce one, you always say that it is the last North American Mucky Pup show…yet you keep booking them. Are you KISS or something?
[Laughs] It’s funny; I do mean it each time I say it. I do think that it really is the last one, but then something really interesting pops up that we don’t want to say no to, like the East Coast Tsunami Fest, which has 20-30 bands that people haven’t seen in over a decade. It’s not backbreaking work; it’s fun. So we say yes, but then another one pops up! I don’t mean to be deceiving, but the party keeps going on, and we don’t want to bail out.
So you don’t book shows blind; there’s a distinct reason for each show you play?
That’s right; it’s not something that we seek out. We don’t have a booking agent or a manager. When we did the reunion show at Mexicali Live, we wanted to record it for a DVD, and since the venue was only a mile from my house, it was convenient. But then one thing led to another. We don’t think about it like, “Let’s do a new tour for 2012; which clubs are we gonna play?” It’s simply a matter of a couple interesting gigs floating our way and us saying yes to them.
