Writing is outlet for St. Augustine mother's grief after fatal overdose
Alison Richard shares photographs of her son, Daniel Mark Richard, that she put together as a makeshift memorial. Alison lost her 23-year-old son to a drug overdose on Feb. 1. His father died when he was 9 years old and later Daniel was hit by a truck while riding his bike in their New Hampshire town. That accident left him with seizures. Why is it that when someone you love dies, the sun still shines, the birds still sing, and life is supposed to go on? It doesn’t make much sense to me. And why is it that when your heart has shriveled up and feels like lead in your chest, that it still keeps beating?
Sometimes, Alison Richard sits in her living room with the sound off, the picture dancing silently across the television screen. At least once a day, she goes in her closet, shuts the door and screams at the top of her lungs. She lets tears drop onto the silver frame that holds her last picture of her 23-year-old son. She smudges the glass with kisses.
This is life now. Passing months don’t make it easier.
Though her son was grown, Richard blames herself for much: for not realizing Daniel was abusing drugs. For moving Daniel to Florida, a state that allowed her son easy access to the prescriptions for high-powered painkillers that poisoned him.
For not being able to protect him from the overdose that killed him Feb. 1.
Richard has used the written word to confront the pain. She writes on an obituary page to her son, telling him about her struggles. She keeps a notebook with a heart she drew on the front for the darker, more personal thoughts. She writes online to other grieving parents, sharing memories of her own child and condolences for theirs. She delved into the world her son was living in, trying to reach out to drug users before their mothers, too, were destroyed.

It’s been four months now, and Richard feels like a broken record. Why did he leave me? How could this happen? Could I have done something differently?
Each question lingers. Occasionally, the questions come from other people, and she knows they think she must have had a bad kid to lose him the way she did. She wants people to know she didn’t have a bad kid.

She begged him to be careful with the powerful prescription he left with. Later that day, she found Daniel's best friend in her home with a needle in hand and something tied around his arm. She told him he would end up dead and kicked him out.

** I was going to edit pics and post this update Monday night. Instead, I sat out on our patio with my family and neighbors. Stuffed myself with gooey -yummy smores and enjoyed a beautiful night.
