In the middle of the summer, during the height of festival season, a local Rotary club is about to throw one of the biggest parties of the year.
The Brats, Brews and Blues Festival returns in its 11th iteration Saturday, Aug. 13, and will include all the titular food, drink and song that have made the event a success for more than a decade.
A chance to sample local beers, eat a hearty bratwurst dinner and take in live bands, all set under the cottonwood trees at the idyllic Klamath Yacht Club — it's not hard, said restaurant and brewery co-owner Jodi Kucera, to understand why the BB&B has become one of the Basin's favorite fundraiser events.
“It looks like a big party, it feels like a big party,” she said. “It is a big party.”
Since its inception in 2000, the BB&B has drawn thousands to the shore of Upper Klamath Lake, including anywhere from 50 to 100 people each year from out of area.
“And they're surprised to see the quality of entertainment in Klamath Falls,” said Klamath Basin Sunrise Rotary Club board member and festival organizer Don Hoffheins.
At the heart of that entertainment are four blues bands, including local favorites The Craig Allen Blues Band and Soul'D Out.
“Even though I still consider myself the biggest rookie in Southern Oregon, I'm proud of what we've accomplished,” said local blues-rock front man Craig Allen.
But the event wouldn't be the same without its bratwurst.

Rotary volunteers simmer the sausages in beer, serving the meat with sauerkraut, German potato salad and a pickle.
Hoffheins said the brats set the BB&B apart from other blues festivals in the state. In the past, the Rotary club considered changing the meal.
“And we've just always come back to the Bratwurst dinners,” he said.
Rotarian Vicki Powley said the tradition began with Saul Silverman and the late Byron Sagunsky, two local doctors and Rotary club volunteers who founded the BB&B. The pair agreed to serve bratwurst at the first event.
