Kindergarten End Of Year
End of kindergarten just the beginning for Ethan
Six wonderful years ago, on June 13, 2005, our first son, Ethan, was born. Not even four months later on October 6, 2005 he was diagnosed with a genetic disorder called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1. We were given little hope and told Ethan would pass away by the time he was a year old.
His condition affects all of the muscles of his body, including the respiratory muscles. Ethan cannot walk, talk or even breathe on his own anymore. However, his condition does not affect him mentally and Ethan is a bright, happy and social little boy. The past school year has only further expanded upon that happiness and with that, we must thank an amazing community of educators, parents, neighbors, students, friends and family. We thank the town of Fairfield, especially the North Stratfield School community for giving our son the gift of support.
Ethan started kindergarten in September 2010 at North Stratfield School, attending school with his nurse, Bernadette, and his special education teacher, Stacey. He has been in Ms. Darcy Shoop 's class and was welcomed by a wonderful group of kids who have become the best friends we could ever dream of to our little boy. We worked closely all year with Principal Jackson and the rest of the school's staff to ensure that Ethan was safe, healthy and most importantly happy at North Stratfield. We could not have been more pleased with the way the Fairfield Public School System treated Ethan's case. Never have we had any doubt that Ethan was well cared for at North Stratfield. Ethan uses a special computer to work on at school and has a special seat, as well. A special base was made by Greg Daigle , who is the lead carpenter for the schools, that accommodates Ethan's ventilator and takes every need he has into account.
We even signed Ethan up for T-ball this past spring and Fairfield Little League has not only gone above and beyond to make Ethan feel like he is part of the team, but he has made even more friends and has shown the kids that being "different" can also mean you like to do the same things for fun! Ethan even marched in the Memorial Day parade with his Team Apex; to his coaches, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for including Ethan so whole-heartedly this season.
As kindergarten concludes, we have been reflecting often over the past few days as to what a true miracle attending school has been for Ethan. It has been a dream come true watching Ethan participate in school activities, bring home art projects, and make new friends. James, Brendan, Samantha, Giana, Juliana, Nicky, Colin, Madison, Derek, Wade, Katie, Rebecca, Sreejita, Jack, Ella, Gracen, Ben, Chris, and Isabella ... you will be forever in our hearts as Ethan's first classmates. Thank you for giving our son a reason to "breathe" every day. Your friendship is the greatest gift he has ever received.

We already gave her one of my handmade bookmarks and a lucky penny necklace this year, so I needed something different but still useful for a teacher. I saw something like this Gift Card Book on a blog a while ago and I knew that I had to do it! I took the idea, tweaked it a bit to work for me and ran with it!
I used double sided tape to stick two pieces of card stock together to make it more sturdy and so each page was "decorated". Then I used a hole punch to punch two holes in the pages.
