Great Plains Energy utility unit buoyed by renewables, despite net ...

NYSE-listed Great Plains Energy ’s utility earnings rose by nearly one third in 2010 to $210.1m year-on-year after it grew its renewable energy commitments by half, despite operational losses of $4.8m.

The company’s operational loss showed a marked reduction on the net gains of $15.7m it achieved the previous year, however.

Despite operational losses in its other segments, Great Plains’ electric utility segment net income rose $77.5m due to a $234.7m improvement in gross profits, following a year in which it strengthened its commitment to renewable energy by 50 per cent.

Small improvements saw its share earnings increase from $1.14 per common share in 2009 to $1.53, driven by new retail rates that took effect in the third quarter of 2009.

Its results included a dilution of $0.09 per share, however, as average shares of outstanding common stock increased five per cent due to the full-year effect of new shares it issued in May 2009.

Mike Chesser, CEO of Great Plains Energy, said, ‘Our strong efforts to maintain our credit quality and financial flexibility were rewarded with a shift in our outlooks from negative to stable at Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s in 2010.
